The Loogootee Volunteer Fire Department is an essential part of the community, providing valuable firefighting and rescue services to the residents of Loogootee and the surrounding area. The department is made up of a team of dedicated and highly trained volunteers who are committed to keeping the community safe.
The Loogootee Volunteer Fire Department has a long history of serving the community, having been founded in the late 1800s. Our current Fire Chief is Eric Thomas. We are a 25-member organization that responds to over 200 calls per year, with 29 active members and 3 junior firefighter slots available. Members are compensated for each call they respond to.
In addition to protecting the City of Loogootee and Perry Township, our fire department also covers an approximate 41 square mile area for first response, and we provide mutual aid to surrounding fire departments. Our department is part of Indiana District 10 Emergency Response and is on call for all of Southwest Indiana.
In addition to fire suppression, we are also certified as a Basic Life Support Non-Transport provider and are involved in a variety of emergency response activities, including emergency medical services, extraction, hazard mitigation, hazmat at the operations level, search and rescue, fire and emergency preplanning, public relations demonstrations, and fire prevention programs.
Our chief is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association, and is actively involved in planning and training for large-scale mutual aid assistance and other issues facing the fire service. We have a strong working relationship with all levels of response, from local to state to federal, and are always willing to provide equipment and manpower when requested. We regularly train with our mutual aid partners to ensure that we can work together effectively as one team during an emergency.
