The O&M railroad was preparing to come through the area and Mr. Gootee realized the advantages. Families began to move into the new town from Mt. Pleasant and Dover Hill. Doctors and general merchandisers from those areas also moved into town.

One of the most significant events in the city's history was the construction of the Louisville, Evansville, and St. Louis Railroad in the 1850s. This brought economic growth and development to the area, making Loogootee an important hub for trade and transportation.
